Mike returned to the fitness profession in 2013 after a 40 year corporate career, including 24 years in the former Bell System (now Verizon) and 16 years as a consultant with Price Waterhouse and IBM. Mike has been a lifelong athlete, including high school Cross Country, Basketball and Baseball where he was a member of the Sectional Championship Baseball team in his senior year. He graduated with a B.S. from West Virginia Tech, where he majored in Physical Education/Health, Mike ran cross-country and was captain of the team during his senior year.
After graduating from college, Mike continued to pursue his love of running and raced frequently in local and national road races throughout the 70’s and early 80’s. Beginning in the Mid-80’s, Mike returned to his first love and became an adult baseball player. Mike continues to play in the Maine Woods Baseball league and participates in the Roy Hobbs World Series each fall. He was a member of the DC Mets team that won the Roy Hobb’s Legends “A” division World Series in 2011.
After a health issue, Mike focused on fitness and diet, where he rediscovered his love for hard training and athletic competition. Mike is certified as a Personal Trainer through the National Academy of Sports Science (NASM) and has an additional certification in Corrective Exercise, Group Training Specialist as well being a qualified TRX trainer. Mike worked as a trainer at Fitness on the Run in Alexandria Virginia (2013 – 2014), where he trained clients of all ages in both individual and group settings.
Since relocating to Portland, Maine from Northern Virginia, Mike has continued his passion for baseball and is focused on becoming the best trainer he can be. He welcomes you to stop by Optimal Self and chat about your health and fitness goals.
